The iPhone 17 Air is the iPhone 17 series phone we’ve been eagerly anticipating. We don’t mind the features we might lose by not going Pro or Pro Max. We’re happy with a regular iPhone equipped with a flagship chip, as long as it boasts a large screen and a much thinner body. The iPhone 16 Plus nearly checked all those boxes, but its footprint was too large for us.
We’re ready to make even more compromises. We’re okay with a single-camera experience if that’s what Apple decides on, and we’re willing to move to eSIM. We’re even open to using a phone with less-than-stellar battery life. After all, how can an ultra-thin iPhone compete with the battery life of the Plus or Pro Max? Galaxy S25 Slim buyers might share similar feelings about the ultra-thin S25 variant coming this year, especially regarding battery life.
The good news? The battery capacities for the iPhone 17 Air and Galaxy S25 Slim might have leaked. The bad news? Some of us might feel uneasy about the figures, particularly Android users. But there’s no need to panic. Despite smaller battery packs, we expect decent battery life on both phones.
A leaker known as Digital Chat Station on Weibo recently shared that the iPhone 17 Air and Galaxy S25 Slim will have ultra-thin designs, with frames measuring between 5.x mm and 6.x mm. Consequently, their batteries will range between 3,000 mAh and 4,000 mAh. For context, the iPhone 14 series had batteries ranging from 3,279 mAh (iPhone 14) to 4,685 mAh (iPhone 16 Pro Max). Despite those capacities, the iPhone 16 series delivered great battery life across the board, especially on larger models.
We anticipate that an iPhone 17 Air with a 3,000 mAh to 4,000 mAh battery could last about a day with average to heavy use. There’s no way Apple would launch such a product if the battery life wasn’t at least decent. Let’s not forget that Apple’s ultra-thin M4 iPad Pro maintained excellent battery life, thanks to its efficient design.
Apple’s A-series and M-series chips will be crucial in conserving battery. The A19 chip powering the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be more efficient than its predecessor. Additionally, the iPhone 17 Air will likely support a 120Hz refresh rate, with its OLED panel contributing further to energy efficiency.
The Galaxy S25 Slim
The same logic applies to the Galaxy S25 Slim. The Galaxy S24 Ultra demonstrated how good battery life can be in a flagship Android phone. Moreover, the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which will power many Android flagships this year (including the Galaxy S25 series), has excelled in battery life tests.
A 3,000 mAh to 4,000 mAh battery could be sufficient for the Galaxy S25 Slim. While these figures might initially concern Android users accustomed to larger batteries, the base Galaxy S24 already features a 4,000 mAh battery. Its successor might offer a similar capacity.
Considering Android’s continued optimizations and the Snapdragon 8 Elite’s efficiency, the Galaxy S25 Slim should provide solid battery life. Additionally, Samsung might opt for a slightly larger body than Apple’s to include a marginally bigger battery.
All of this is speculative, based on loose information from Digital Chat Station. However, the leaker also hints that Chinese smartphone makers may respond to Apple and Samsung with ultra-thin devices of their own, potentially featuring 5,000+ mAh batteries and a focus on lightweight designs and photography.
